The cutters are well designed, easy to install and leave a great smooth finish. So much better for planing figured wood than my old steel knives.
I had purchased a cutter for my jointer and was so impressed I bought this one as well. Installing was a bit time consuming, but it was well worth it. My planer runs much better than it did even when new. It's quieter, smoother, and faster than the bladed cutter was.

The Sheartak cutter head will eliminate the ripple effect that Makita straight blades produce. The change out was easy if you use the You-tube video. I have used it on Maple, Oak, Beech, and Apple-wood and it produced a very smooth surface.

Cutting head cuts a wonderful smooth and even surface. Difference is night and day between the old head and this new one. Only slight issue is the bearings are set in slightly in from from old head and sit outside of casing by 3/32 on either end, but it seems to not effect the cut or performance of the unit at all. Still give this unit a 5 star rating. Also, super quiet compared to the old head.
Before they even shipped the cutterhead, customer service reached out because they noticed that the replacement inserts I ordered were the wrong size for the cutterhead. They corrected my mistake and refunded me $5 for the difference. When I did receive the cutterhead, I was impressed by the quality and look of it. It really is an impressive looking piece of equipment. To be honest I was a little concerned about the installation because this was going into an older grizzly jointer. However, the installation of the new bearings and cutterhead was actually pretty simple and not intimidating at all. Once installed, I was shocked at just how smoothly it cut. Running some maple through the jointer was not only quieter than the normal blades, but much smoother. So glad I finally made the decision to make this purchase and I can't wait to run more wood through it.

I bought this cutter head to replace the segmented head in my King 8in jointer. First, the appearance of the Sheartak helical head is impressive, even my neighbor, who was present during installation, was impressed by the build quality. Installation is relatively straight forward and proceeded well, except. The bearing, on the belt drive side of the jointer, was extremely difficult to remove from the bearing retainer, no fault to Sheartak. Once that issue resolved, the rest was smooth sailing. Talking about smooth. The "Sheartak Helical Cutter Head w Carbide Cutters" is an absolute dream come true. The cut is quieter, cleaner and the jointer sounds as though it is not working as hard. I am so impressed with this product, I will be imstalling one in my King KC-13HPC thickness planer as soon as I have saved the money. Onyone that tries to convince you or sell you on the segmented head is wrong. The difference in all aspects of perfomance are greatly improved with a true helical cutter head, period. Excellent quality overall. Installation was straightforward, and I strongly suggest using new bearings for the best results. The bearings aren’t installed out of the box, but having a machine shop press them in is quick and inexpensive. Delivers a major performance upgrade compared to straight knives.
Easy to install, work like a charm
I ordered this cutting head as part of a restoration of my grandfather's old stand alone Shop Smith thickness planer. Installation was relatively easy (with the help of a few YouTube videos). Since this was my first thickness planer, I don't have a good reference for how much of an improvement it made (old blades that hadn't been used in 25 years are not a worth comparison). However, the boards coming out of the planer now are very smooth and nice to work with and I can take off 1/16+ layers off 8-inch wide old hard wood boards without overloading the motor. I liked this cutting head so much that I ordered one for my jointer as well.

I bought the 20" planer 27 years ago from Busy Bee. There was no model number on it. So I called Seartek and customer service provided me with all the measurement that I needed to confirm the head they had would fit. I also had some questions about cutting angles of the knives which most don't understand. The service was awesome. The cutter head arrived and was exactly as described and was not to hard to install. The first thing I planed was an 2" thick 18" wide oval cross cut for a taxidermy mount. The grain goes just about every direction. It planed perfectly. The planer is much quieter and has plently of power now, before it was lacking on big pieces. I can't wait to plane more. I wish I would have changed it sooner. I Hated planing, because the cutting angle of the old head caused tear out exactly where you didn't want it.
I will repeat. The service was excellent.
