Spiral Cutterhead for Kity Bestcombi 2000 Planer Thicknesser has 34 carbide inserts sitting along 4 spirals in a stepped way. Instead of cutting the whole length of the single straight blade, the spiral cutter head makes staggered cuts across the length. As the inserts are slightly angled to the feeding, the spiral cutter head produces a shear cut. It leaves a much smoother and cleaner finish than the regular straight-blade cutter head does. Noise is hugely reduced. The inexpensive carbide inserts last 40 to times longer than HSS blades work. Every insert is marred with a dot in the corner which shows you which edges can be used. It's cheaper in the long run. Dust extraction is much easier with the shorter and thinner chips.
